Allerthorpe School in Pocklington, part of the Melrose Education group of schools, is celebrating its first Ofsted inspection, since its opening, which judged the school ‘Good’ overall, with an ‘Outstanding’ rating for Behaviour and Attitudes.
The inspection, carried out from 23rd to 25th September 2025, found that learners at Allerthorpe benefit from a nurturing and ambitious environment where they are supported to achieve both academically and personally. Inspectors praised the school for the remarkable progress learners make in developing positive relationships and sustaining excellent attendance.
The report notes that “the school supports pupils to make rapid improvements in both their behaviour and attendance. These significant improvements are sustained over time. Pupils’ rates of attendance are significantly higher than in other schools. Consequently, pupils are able to benefit from the school’s well-considered provision.”
Inspectors were particularly impressed by the school’s culture of warmth and inclusivity, writing that “pupils enjoy their time in this welcoming and inclusive school. They quickly build positive, supportive relationships with adults and peers.” Staff were recognised for their deep understanding of each learner’s needs and their success in helping learners to flourish socially and emotionally as well as academically.
The report also commended the school’s academic and enrichment offer, stating that “the school has developed an ambitious curriculum” and that “the school provides pupils with a wealth of opportunities beyond the curriculum.” Together, these findings reflect a rich and varied learning experience that extends far beyond the classroom, helping learners to build confidence, curiosity, and readiness for life beyond school.
Sarah Grove, Principal of Allerthorpe School, said:
“We are incredibly proud of this report, which recognises the commitment and care that go into every aspect of life at Allerthorpe. Our learners’ achievements and personal growth are at the heart of everything we do, and it’s wonderful to see that reflected in the inspection findings. This outcome is a testament to our dedicated staff, supportive families, and of course, to our fantastic learners.”
Inspectors also highlighted the strength of the school’s leadership and management, noting that robust systems are in place to ensure that every learner receives tailored and effective support from the start of their journey at Allerthorpe.
Tracey Storey, CEO, Founder and Executive Chair of Melrose Education, added:
“Allerthorpe School embodies the values we hold across Melrose Education, quality, integrity, and ambition, and opportunity for every learner. To achieve such a strong outcome in its very first inspection is an outstanding reflection of the team’s expertise and commitment to improving the lives of young people. We’re incredibly proud of Sarah and her team for creating a school that genuinely transforms futures.”
